Re: Joe Wheeler of Confederate cavalry ?

Jay --

One of several Confederate generals to be raised in the North, Joseph Wheeler served much of the war as chief of cavalry for the Confederate Army of Tennessee. In September of 1864 he was finishing a disasterous raid through east and middle Tennessee, and spent much of that month attempting to collect surviving troops in north Alabama.

There are numerous websites about this famous Confederate leader. Here's one:

Some of the information on this site is inaccurate. For instance, Wheeler was not promoted to lieutenant general nor was he in command of Hampton's Cavalry in the Carolinas. Wade Hampton ranked Wheeler and was sent to restore some sense of order and control to Wheeler's command during the final campaign.
