I seem to remember by some contemporary accounts that in the heat of battle at Santiago, General Wheeler supposedly was urging his men to "...whup the damn yankees..." as they charged the Spanish positions.

Have also read that one reason that President McKinley urged the commissioning of Wheeler in the US Army was to help sooth some of the ill feelings still left over from THE WAR and to help recruit volunteers from the former Confederate States where there were still some ill feelings from Reconstruction...
