In January 1865, Col. Peter C. Hardeman was in command of the 1st Texas Cavalry and was consolidated with Lt. Col. Charles William Tait's 4th Texas Cavalry Battalion, Texas State Troops at Camp Groce, near Hempstead,Texas. The cavalry units were dismounted and were to be used for coastal defense if necessary.
On April 7, 1865, Col. Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry Regiment and Lt. Col. Tait's 4th Texas Cavalry Battalion, Texas State Troops, was placed in Brig. Gen. James Edward Harrison's 1st Brigade of Maj.Gen. Samuel B. Maxey's Infantry Division at Hempstead, Texas. Col. Peter C.Hardeman resigned and took his family and a saw mill to Brazil.
On May 26, 1865, Gen. Edmund Kirby-Smith surrendered the Trans-Mississippi Department.
