From the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion (OR's)it appears he was killed near Morganza Louisiana. There is no direct record of his death in the OR but there is a report of a skirmishes which took place at the end of September in this area.
I could not find a record of him in the National Archives roll for Likens' Regt. (M323-171) because no muster rolls for Company "K" exist. This group was transfered to Likens' Regt from Terrells Texas Cavalry ( also known as 34 or 37 Texas Cavalry) so you may find record of him in that unit before his transfer to Likens' Regt.
Can you send me a scan of the notice of his death? I am writing a history of Likens' 35th Texas Cavalry Regiment.
BTW. Technically the Red River Camapaign was over by Oct of 1864, however, Likens' Regt. and others continued to have a hot time with skirmishing along the front lines with Union Troops near the Red River. This theater of the war never got the attention that other battles in the East got.
