They were both for his service in the Civil War. According to the Army's Center for Military History: (http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm) They were both awarded in 1865 for valiantluy capturing enemy flags. It states that the first was for action in 1863, as a corporal; and the second for action in 1865 as a 1st Lt. under his brother in a vol. regt. (the regulation may have been for regular army officers).
