Re: Trans-Mississippi Dept

I don't recall seeing a steamboat captain by the name of J.T. Cleveland in any of the Cleveland ancestors that married a Coffee. However, there could be an obscure relationship.

In early America if two or more people had the same surname, they were likely related. For example, my grandfather John T. Coffee claimed that if your surname was Coffee, you are related in some way. That notion came from my g.g.g.g.g. grandfather Peter Coffee, who was one of only three Coffees who settled in the American colonies by to 1730. One disapeard or died before he was married, one died in Burmuda and the third was Peter Coffee (c.1700-1771) who was born in Ulster, Northern Ireland. Peter arrived in Portsmouth VA aboard the prison ship "Forward" in 1730.The prisoners were taken to Potomac Prison and Peter remained there for about two years before he was released as a endentured farm worker for an additional 12 years. He got married and settled in Prince Edward County VA and raised tobacco and 11 children.

He may have been convicted of spitting on an Englishman since Peter Coffee was a Protestant Scots-Irish Ulsterman.
