The Col.Peter C. Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry - Arizona Brigade and the Col.Trezevant C. Hawpe's 31st Texas Cavalry were confused in 1862. In 1862, the Confederate headquarters in Austin made a clerical error and assigned the 1st Texas Cavalry the 31st numerical designation. It is also likely the 31st Texas Cavalry was going to be consolidated with the 1st Texas Cavalry in Dallas but the 31st had already began their move to Missouri by the time the 1st Texas arrived in Dallas.

What area of Texas was Joseph W. Evans from? The 31st Texas Cavalry was raised in Dallas County and vacinity and the 1st Texas Cavalry raised 500 men in Colorado County, 60 miles west of Houston. S.O. #81 ordered the 1st Texas to Dallas by companies but by the time the entire regiment arrived in Dallas, the number of recruits had been reduced to 250 men because of desertions and sickness. The 1st Texas Cavalry continued north to the Warren Supply Depot in Fannin County and mustered an aditional 300 men from local militia companies beforing moving into Indian Territory and Arkansas.
