Re: Granville Jones, Capt. Ed Chambers, Collin Cou

In December 1864, Col.Peter C. Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry Regiment returned to Fannin County from the second battle of Cabin Creek, I.T. After arriving at the Warren Supply Depot in northeastern Fannin County, Col. Hardeman requested Capt. Henry F. Bone's unattached mounted company and Lt.A.W. McFarland's squadron of dismounted cavalry to be assigned to the 1st Texas Cavalry Regiment in order to return the unit to regimental strength. Lt. McFarland's unit was not accepted because they did not have suitable cavalry mounts. Wheather Capt. Bone's unassigned mounted company was actually transferred to the 1st Texas Cavalry is unclear (A-195).

On February 18,1865, the 1st Texas Cavalry regiment was moved from Fannin County to Hempstead,Texas where it was dismounted and combined with Col. James Edward Harrison's 15th Infantry Regiment. Col. Harrison was promoted to brigidier general and placed in command of the newly organized 1st Texas Brigade, Maj.Gen. John Austin Wharton's Division.

The 31st Texas Dismounted Cavalry Regiment and Col. George Washington Jones' 17th Texas Infantry Regiment was combined to make the 2nd Texas Brigade, Maj. Gen. Samuel Bell Maxey's Division. The 1st and 2nd Texas Brigades were being prepared for coastal defense.

From February through April 1865, many of the unattached units in Texas were being combined with other units and were moved to coastal areas such as Harrisburg (Houston), Hempstead, Galveston, Indianola and Brownsville where they were being prepared for coastal defense.

The defense of the coast was unecessary because General Edmund Kirby-Smith surrendered the Trans-Mississippi Department on May 26, 1865.
