I am sure the rifle Pink higgins used was a 1873 Winchester .44/40 lever action carbine. "Two shots per second for buffalo or Indians, it has no competitor" was the slogan the makers claimed when they introduced the firearm. Or it could have been a Model 1860 Henry repeating rifle.

In 1870, Pink Higgins went to Mexico to purchase some Mexican cattle for his Lampasas River herd. He had previously paid the Mexican rancher for the herd at a cattle sale in Lampasas County. When he arrived in Mexico to drive the cattle back to Texas, the Mexican cattleman had already sold the cattle to someone else and would not give him his money back. Pink Higgins got in a gun battle with the Mexican rancher and shot and killed him with a Model 1866 Winchester .44/40. The story was told that Higgins always had the latest version of the Winchester repeater.

In 1898, the last man Pink Higgins killed was a range detective named John Standifer on the Spur Ranch in the Texas panhandle. Both Higgins and Standifer carried Winchester rifles and were range detectives on the Espuela (Spur) Ranch and disliked each other. The feud between the two men was probably left over from the Horrel-Higgins Feud. The two range detectives met on a road and decided to settle the matter. They shot it out and Pink Higgins survived. Pink Higgins lived to be an old man and died of a heart attack at his home in Spur, Texas. It was known that Pink Higgins could ride and shoot on the day he died just as good as he did when he was a young man.
