Re: Henry Porter of Quantrill's Guerrillas

The more you learn the more fun it is. The '66 Yellow Boy fired the same .44 rim fire as the Henry. The '73 was the first .44-40. Pink must have been some man.

Ellijay (two "l"s) is the seat of Gilmer County, while Jasper County is southeast of Atlanta, the city of Jasper is due north, in Pickens County. My grandmother on Daddy's side was a Wallace from Ballground, in Cherokee County. You know the story of how it got the name. It was always said she was half Cherokee, and she sure looked it, and wore her hair in braids all her life.

When Grand Daddy Boring's first wife died, he was 42 years old. (His daddy died at Seven Pines) He lived in Cobb County, but somehow went up to Ball Ground and arranged to marry my grandmother, Maud. She was 15! He had a daughter almost that old. Aunt Vada always called her Mamma, though.. She called my grand dad Mr. Boring til he died in 1942, at 85.

Maud had a sister, Mary, who lived in Chatsworth, in Murray County. She married a Murray. She looked like an Indian, as well. I'm supposed to be 1/8 Sherokee, but havce never been able to actually prove my grandmother's heritage.

You probably are kin to Governor Gilmer, as you suspect. There were four Boring brothers who moved into what is now Cobb County in 1838, taking up Cherokee land. One of them is my GGF, but I'm not sure which.

It is interesting how many people went from Georgia to Texas, including M. Lamar, the first V.P. of the Republic.

My other grand mother was a McCollum. A McCollum fought at Bejar, before the Alamo. He came from Mississippi, and I have no idea how we might be related. Well, enough, or Jim will get us. Stan
