Re: ? for Jerry Coffee:Texas Migration

Glynda,

General John Coffee of Georgia was my g.g.g.g.great grandfather Peter Coffee's (Sr.) grandson. He should not be confused with Gen. John Coffee of Tennessee, who was his cousin.

Gen. John Coffee of Georgia (1782-1836) was born in Prince Edward County Virginia. His parent were Peter (Jr.) and Sarah (Smith) Coffee who were married on Nov.14,1773. Peter Coffee, Jr.'s parents were Peter (Sr.) and Susannah (Matthews) Coffee. Gen Coffee (of Georgia) was general of the Georgia State Militia during the Creek Indian War. He served in the U.S. Congress 1833 until his death. Gen. John Coffee surveyed and built the "Coffee Road" using state militia volunteers and slaves. The road was 150 miles long and was built through Georgia to the Florida state line. He was paid $10 a mile.

Barney B. and Frances (_____) Whaley were from Murray County Georgia. Barney and Frances Whaley operated the Confederate post office in Dalton Georgia during the civil war. They were the parents of my great great grandfather Peyton Green Whaley (1833-1901). Peyton G. Whaley married (1) Matilda Thorn and moved to Hempstead County Arkansas in 1857 after Matilda died.

Peyton G. Whaley became an overseer on the Arkansas plantation of relatively wealthy John Anderson, who was from Missouri.P.G.Whaley soon married John's daughter, Lucinda Catherine Anderson (1841-1939). Peyton G. Whaley served in Col. James Code Monroe's 1st Arkansas Cavalry Regiment, C.S.A. He was detailed as a blacksmith and ferrier then saw action at the battles of Cane Hill and Prairie Grove Arkansas.

After the war, P.G. and Catherine (Anderson) Whaley moved to Brown County Texas in 1868 and started a dairy, produce farm, wholesale produce warehouse and a retail grocery store in Brownwood,Texas. The grocery and farm was started with what was left of John Anderson's estate. Their daughter, Nora Kate Whaley, married John Taylor Coffee (1870-1973), who were my grandparents.

Lucinda Catherine (Anderson) Whaley had a brother named William Anderson who came to Brown County with them. Her brother may have been the so-called Brownwood William "Bloody Bill" Anderson. Catherine (Anderson) Whaley told the newspaper that she was William Anderson's brother, but which Anderson?
