Actually, it was scattered throughout the state, but most incidents were either in north Texas, or in the German areas west of San Antonio and Austin, as well as the counties southeast of Austing along the Colorado river.

Although Buenger's book is a good starting point, the field has barely been plowed. Consider the Battle of the Nueces, [southerns vs. Germans] and the great Gainsville hangings as the most notorious incidents. The German counties along the Colorado river were placed under martial law for resistance to the draft in early 1863. Unionists were imprisoned in Smith County in the fall of 1863, and the imprisonment of five unionists by Magruder in the fall of 1863 led to a Constitutional crisis between Magruder and the Texas Supreme Court in March, 1864.
