Dan B. Sanders, John Baldock, L. D. "Dow" Nance, and Tom A. Nance were Union sympathsizers, and with the exception of Dan Sanders, they were conscripts in Col. P.C. Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry and all were in Capt.John Henry Damron's company with my great, grandfather, Joshua D. Coffee.
Tom Nance deserted in 1863 and was caught and placed in the Brush Battalion. Dan Sanders was a draft evader and was also caught and placed in the Brush Battalion. After the war, Dow and Tom Nance, John Baldock and Dan Sanders joined Lewis Peacock's Union League.
In July 1868, John Baldock, Dow and Tom Nance were killed when Bob Lee and his men attacked a Union League meeting that was being held at the Nance Ranch. None of Bob Lee's men were injured during the gun battle.
