Joseph M. Phipps, 78 Ill., was killed at Chickamauga, 9-20; My research doesn't support that any similarly named Texan was. Incidentally, at least 9 men named "John Smith" were killed or mortally wounded here on 9-19 and 9-20 - it was an enormous battle.
