Mansfield Battlefield Site

Had a chance yesterday to revisit the Mansfield State Commemorative area in Mansfield, La. They have redone their interpretive markers adding 10 new markers with a tremendous amount of information (much more than the usual minimalist approach that you get at the National Parks). The new markers are similar to the war department markers that were put out at Antietam in the late 19th Century. The ranger on site most days is Scott Dearman who is a big Civil War buff and it is worth the trip just to talk with him about the battle. This battle and Pleasant Hill fought the next day saw the largest concentration of Texas troops in the Civil War. I would encourage anyone who is near Mansfield (about 45 minutes south of Shreveport) to check out the park and the Texas monument that is there. It is a great day trip. Unfortunately, they have only been able to preserve a small part of the battlefield and the site is threatened by a mining operation in addition to development around the state highway that runs through the battlefield.
