I am the great-grandnephew of James C. Monroe. I would like to correct and add a few things to this. His middle name was "Cade". not "Code". Also while you are right about the place and cause of his death as far as we know, you are wrong about the date. I have a copy of a letter from his half-sister to my great-grandfather who was his full brother in 1867 bemoaning his untimely death. He was killed somethime in 1867. We do not know the circumstances or where he is buried. If you know more, I would appreciate any information. We know there were other Confederates with him in Mexico because one of them wrote the family about his death and enclosed his stars from his uniform which I remember in the hands of one of my great-aunts. My great-grandfather was F.M. Monroe and was the regimental surgeon to the 1st Arkansas. He told the family when he returned home to SC that his brother had been promoted to Brigadier General in the last months of the war and succeeded to Fagan's command. I know this is probably true even though there is no official record because the stars I saw had the leaf cluster around them. I hope this adds to your information. If you know anything more about him, please share it with me.
