Re: Mastin Anderson, Tarrant Co., TX

Ms Kodak,

Did this gentleman die or was he killed . I know this sounds silly but let me explain. I mean , there was really no notable combat in Smith County. However, there were many CSA camps around Tyler and Smith County. Obviously, like all military camps during this era, disease took more lives that the actual fighting so he amy have died from disease.
There was a large POW camp ( Camp Ford) in Smith County , however, it wasn't really established until later in 1863, so that kind of let's your man out on that one . Before you start throwing rocks at me for suggesting that your man was a Yankee, my thinking was not that he was an inmate or a prisoner , but, he could have been killed by a prisoner if your man was a guard. But , the dates don't match, so scratch that one .
There was a fairly large and active ordinance works at Tyler where , if they operated like the rest of these ordinance works on both sides , they blew up from time to time . This would certainly qualify the victims as being "killed".
Try this ; go to the Smith County Historical group at smithcountyhistory.org and see if they can't help you . They are a very active and interested group and they can probably put you on the right track. Hope this helps.
Good Hunting , CAM
