Re: 31st Tx Cavalry Co A(Hardeman)

Col. Leonidas Martin's 5th Texas Partisan Rangers and Dawson's Battery also joined Brig.Gen.Gano's Brigade and Gano's Brigade was at full strength by the time it was engaged at the second battle of Cabin Creek ,I.T. on Sept 19,1864. That was the last battle in Indian Territory where $1.5 million in U.S. currency, 250 wagons, mules, horses, supplies, farm animals and stolen household goods was captured. Gano's Brigade received a commendation from Confederate Congress for that action. When the captured U.S. cavalry horses were brought to North Texas, my great grandfather was in Maj. James Roberson Diamond's Brush Battalion in Collin County and he helped corral and change their brands.

Some historical accounts of the battle at Cabin Creek placed the 31st Texas Cavalry in that action but in reality,it was Col. Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry. Col. Hawpe's 31st Texas Cavalry was never in Gano's Brigade. The confusion between the 1st Texas and the 31st Texas still occurs today.

After the second battle of Newtonia,MO, in Sept. 1864, Col. Hawpe's 31st Texas Cavalry regiment was assigned to Poliganac's Brigade. Col.Hawpe resigned and returned to Dallas to manage his freighting business. After the Newtonia engagement, Col. John T. Coffee got drunk and insuborinate and was court martialled. In December 1864, Col.Coffee was aquittted but resigned and went to Mexico with Gen. Shelby and his Confederate exiles.
