Shelly, From Fighting with Ross' Texas Cavalry Brigade, by Griscom the Adjutant of the 9th Tx Cav Rgt; on October 2, 1862, Captain Gidion Smith of Fannon County mustered Company B, of the 9th Texas Cavalry Regiment. He faught with the 9th in the Indian Territories, at Elkhorn Tavern, Ark., at Corinth, MS I and was dropped from that unit on May 25, 1862 when the unit was reorganized. This usually means he was not re-elected to Company Commander and decided to return to Texas. He may have decided not to run for election and went back to Texas for health or other reasons. Many of these officers were later in other Texas units and sme even made General. Use the link Allen provided and you will probably find where he landed on his return. Hope this change of direction works out. In Corinth I, the South used artillery to drive the Union out of Corinth. A few weeks later the union returned with a much larger force and the Southern Army retreated to a more defendable location. I have nothing on Captain Smith in these battles. The reorganization described above occurred between these two actions.
