Gideon ended up in a Prisoner of War camp and his commander later got him released. He had a very large plantation to take care of and there is a historical marker where the plantation stood in Fannin County, outside of Bonham. His father Nathan Smith came from Alabama and fought in the Indian wars as well.

The original house was donated to a college in Texas and I have spent many years trying to locate it. Gideon's son, Gideon Jr. died in 1902 at the age of 40 and so there was a lot of the history lost.

Also Gideon's wife burned everything to do with military papers, slave records and all after the war. She really did not approve of the war in the least or what it had cost everyone involved.

Thanks for your input. I had not heard that he had been that far from home.
