Are we talking about a different Battle of Massard Prairie? The Battle of Massard Prairie on July 27, 1864 was a long way south and west of the old Massard community at Hwy 22 and Chaffin Jr High.

The battle was south-southeast of the old fort (downtown Ft Smith) and just east of the old Greenwood Road. The whole area from US 71 to Massard Road and from Phoenix Ave to Rye Hill is Massard Praire -- Ft Smith Municipal Airport and Ben Geren Park fill much of the area now. The battle was west of Ben Geren Park just south of S. Zero St.

Google Maps and Mapquest don't show the new roads yet but there are pictures and a description done by Dale Cox at:
