Re: No transfer here.

A glance at the two service records shows that these two soldiers both enlisted and served about the same time. The two enlistments took place March 1, 1862, West Point GA, and Apr. 16, 1862, Dallas TX. These are two different men.

The real question concerns the identity of William R. Lovelace in the 8th Confederate Cavalry. The gentleman mentioned by Bert Pittman has three big reasons not to be in military service. These are age, occupation and family. In 1860 William R. Lovelace reported his age as 44, well beyond the upper limit for conscription. As a practicing physician, he was exempt from both Confederate and state militia service. We tend to forget that somebody needed to be at home to deliver babies and treat people in the community, free and slave. Also, having a large family with two sons in the army, it doesn't seem likely he would have left home voluntarily.

There's at least one other Wm. R. Loveless in the area who was much younger and probably served.
