I agree that completely that one would not expect Dr.Lovelace to have served in any regular unit at all... and if he did one would think he would serve in the same unit where he had a son, a brother-in-law, and at least 4 nephews so he could look after them.

One or more researchers have associated his grave in Hix
Texas with the the William Lovelace that served in the 19th Texas Cav. Thats seems to me even more unlikely... that he would move around 800 miles to a new home and soon after joined the Texas Cavalry.
