William,
I, too had an ancestor in the 5th Texas Cavalry or as they were originally known, the 5th Texas Mounted Volunteers. Over the last 20 years or so, I have studied the regiment extensively, traveled to the battle sites of Val Verde VGlorieta three times and read about everything I could get my hands on about the 5th and its sister regiments in Sibley's Brigade and later Green's Brigade and so on. Many years ago, I spoke with the the famous and now late , Col. Simpson of Hillsboro College in Hillsboro , Texas about the very question you have raised, that is, where can I find out about where various companies were raised. He had actually done some work on that vey topic ( for many Texas regiments) and he sent me what he had formulated to date.I will dig around this weekend and see if I can find the paper he sent me . I initially discounted the document a little because it showed my ancestor's company being raised somewhere other that where I knew he had mustered in. However, in general ,it is probabaly a good place to start. I will try to send you some other leads as well during the weekeend . My ancestor was in Co.F of the 5th , which was , at least in part, raised in Washington County ,Texas. Good hunting .
