My great grandmother's brother, Thomas Jefferson "Tom" Blanton enlisted in the 5th Texas Cavalry at Bonham, Fannin County Texas and was assigned to Co.I. There were five recruits named Blanton and were assigned to Co. I, 5th Texas Cavalry and they enlisted at Bonham,Texas. They were ancestors of two different Blanton families who are in Fannin County today and they are not related to each other.

Co. I was raised in Bonham, Texas in 1863 and did not serve in Sibley's New Mexico Campaign. The recruits in Fannin County were placed in Co. I, 5th Texas Cavalry after the regiment returned to Texas and became part of Brig. Gen. Thomas Greens's Brigade and saw action in the Red River Campaign.
