Horatio B. Cushman

Horatio B. Cushman served as a private in the 43rd MS Infantry.

As the son of missionaries working with the Choctaws in MS in the 1830's, he witnessed the removal of most of MS's Native-American population to the Indian Territory.

Late in life, he moved to Texas, apparently near the Red River and the Indian Territory, where he wrote one of the great histories of Native Americans -- "A History of the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Natchez Indians," which basically told the story of the major tribes of Mississippi.

I would love to have any additional information on this most interesting Confederate Veterans turned historian, especially a photo of him and information on his burial site.

Thanks, Texas! -- Jim Huffman, 43rd MS Infantry
