Re: Texas Burials in Georgia-J. H Rape

Rhonda: Yep! A reeal big family. You are correct; the Confederate section is on the northwest side of the Covington City Cemetery, in Newton County. Covington is located on the railroad between Atlanta and Augusta, and thus served as a hospital point for casualties. There is a separate , and much smaller, Confederate cemetery at Oxford, a few miles away, which was established at Oxford College; Oxford is incidentally the forerunner of Emory Unviersity, and there is still, I understand, some connectyion. I am estimating that therre are about 200 men buried in the Confederate cemeteryat Covington, probably only 15-20 at Oxford College Cemetery. The stones at Covingtona re exceedingly ahrd to read; you ahve almost certainly picked up a duplicate., I inventoried the cemetery myself about 15 years ago, and have the rough notes somewhere, but it would take forever to find them.
I,m not aware of a cemetery book for Newton County, but their GenWeb site might be able to help you.
Thanks and Good luck!
