After Major Charles Leroy Morgan returned from action with the 8th Texas Cavalry in Tennessee, he raised an independent squadron of about 150 men which became known as Morgan's Texas Battalion. Due to the battalion's popularity, it later became a regiment with Morgan as leiutenant colonel in command.
Lt.Col. Morgan's Cavalry Regiment was attached to Brig.Gen.William Steele's Brigade which soon became Brig.Gen. William Henry Parson's Brigade and saw action in Louisiana and Arkansas.
