Re: 9th Tx Calvary, Co D, Morgans Regt, Co E

Thanks Alan, I'm going to send for these files through this site, I have learned so much here it is amazing, and everyone is so helpful, I have the site for ording service files from here marked, just plan on doing it after the 1st of the year.
Also of interest maybe, I have an article from the Decatur, Ill Sat. Herald, Sept.26,1885,
it reads:
The night of Oct. 10th 1863, E Julius Foster, editor of the Sherman Patriot, was fouly murdered. Charles Cox and James Young were tried for the crime and acquitted, but the evidence pointed strongly to one Newton Chance, who disappeared, and against whom the indictment for murder was found. The crime had apparently passed out of every one's mind except that of Sheriff Douglass, who at the time of the murder was a young officer and knew Chance by sight.
Yesterday Sheriff Douglass casualy walked into court and arrested a man whom he said was Chance, which was denied by the prisoner. Only four of the thirteen witness in the case are now living, but Douglass is certain he has the right man, and believes he will be proven guilty.
The prisoner was stupefied and for a moment could not move, Then he declared that he was not Newton Chance, and accompanied the Sheriff to Jail.
This is the only reference I have found to this, and not sure of the outcome.
Just thought it was interesting.
