Death of Texan After Surrender

I previously reported the burial of a Texas soldier in Walton County, Georgia, which information came from the history of Walton County. An examination of the grave reveals much more:

11 TEX CAV: Wall, John H.; Co F; d. 5 May 1865; buried Jersey Methodist, Jersey, Walton County. The tombstone also reads: "A Brave Soldier Who Never Surrendered, Killed by a Federal Lieutenant."

Without more, I am left to speculate, Was he killed when he refused to surrender, and was shot down? Or was it more sinister, was he killed as he was on his way home from North Carolina, following the surrender of Johnston's army?
