Re: Danger to Confederate Reunion Grounds SHS

I wouldn't exactly say that the state wants to destroy the
Confederate Reunion Grounds site. I believe they want to
shuffle a potentially controversial (i.e. Confederate) site
off the state's rolls and onto some other entity's
shoulders. This, in itself, might not be too bad if there
was a local government entity that wanted to shoulder the
burden. As far as I know there is no such entity. I don't
believe that the city of Mexia would be willing to take on
the burden of maintenance, small though it is. The SCV might
be interested but the nearest camp of any size is some
distance away from the park. I am not an SCV member so I
really don't have any insight into what's going on there.
So far the UDC seems to have expressed more interest in what
happens to the park than the SCV has done.

The thing that gripes me most about this is the underhanded
way in which the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has
gone about this. To my knowledge none of the people who
have asked, myself among them, has received a satisfactory
answer to the who/why/how the site wound up on this list
of "low priority" sites that are suitable for transfer or
"de-accession". I have been told that a committee of
experts determined which sites were to be low priority on
TPWD's list of assets. I have asked twice for the names
of the specific committee members who made this choice and
have not received a reply. To my eye the committee is a
just smoke screen intended to diffuse or redirect the wrath
of the public should any anger be forthcoming. Nobody at
TPWD seems to want to come forward and take responsibility
for this decision.
