In terms of the Civil War, a "legion" was a term given to a mixed infantry/cavalry unit of less than brigade strength. The Southern army had several such units, for example Cobb's and Phillips' GA Legions, formed by influential recruiters. In the field the mating of infantry and cavalry did not work, and the cavalry component was separated from the infantry and made part of the cavalry corps of the army the legion was serving in.
