Sarah, the Texans were truly the heart of the Texas Brigade; but for over a year they had the able assistance of the 18th georgia, who helped rout the Yanks at Gaines Mill, and who were right beside them at Second Manassas. The 18th was part of the Texas Brigade until November 1862, just before Fredericksburg. In fact, The 18th's commander, Col., later General, Wm. T. Wofford, commanded the Texas Brigade at Antietam, when the brigade did so well at such great cost in the Cornfield. Although the Texans suffered high casualties at Antietam, the Georgians didn't get off scot free; August 30, 1862..............Mannassas, No. 2.............................37 killed...37 wounded
September 14, 1862........Boonsboro Gap..................................................1 wounded
September 17, 1862........Sharpsburg.......................................27 killed...63 wounded. (From the history of the 18th Georgia, at:http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~allenatk/history.html which also says: "On the 30th, the regiment participated in the second battle of Manassas, completely routing the enemy, killing the greater portion of the Fifth and Tenth New York Zouave Regiments, and capturing a battery of four guns.

During the heat of the engagement, Private William Kay succeeded in capturing the colors of the Tenth New York Regiment. The casualties during this terrific battle in the old Eighteenth, amounted to thirty-seven killed and eighty-seven wounded." Long live Texas and Georgia! Stan
