A letter written by the regimental commander on Andrew J. Ross and his qualifications to be promoted to 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant appear in his military service file. A note describes Sgt. Maj. Ross as a "a very intelligent man" and a suitable replacement for Adjutant Bird Holland, who died of wounds in battle at Pleasant Hill LA.
