Re: williamson selllers 17th texas calvery

The 17th TX Cavalry was captured at Arkansas Post, but was later exchanged. It continued to serve in the Army of Tennessee, but was drastically under strength due to losing so many of the command at Arkansas Post. The soldiers that escaped capture were later formed into the 17th Consolidated Dismounted TX Cavalry. This unit consisted not only of the escaped soldiers formerly with the 17th TX Cavalry, but included soldiers from other units that avoided capture as well. The 17th TX Consolidated Cavalry was dismounted and served as infantry, however. It was, at times, brigaded with other regiments, as mentioned in a previous post. At Mansfield, the 17th TX Consolidated Dismounted Cavalry was a part of Polignac's Brigade.

One of my great-great uncles fought with the 17th TX Cavalry, but escaped capture at Arkansas Post. He was kept on the roster with the 17th as a deserter in the Trans-MS Dept. However, he actually was a part of the 17th Consolidated Dismounted Cavarly and fought at Mansfield. Obviously there was no communication between units in those days.
