I agree that there should be a military record. However, if exists, I can't find it. Ancestry.com has photocopies of Civil War Prisoner of War Records. These are copies of the original ledger pages. Reuben Finely, pvt in 5th Texas, is listed as being captured in New Mexico. There are several 5th Texas soldiers who were captured along with him. He is listed as being exchanged on Sept 3, 1862. In another entry is listed on the roll of POWs at Camp Douglas in April 1862. I would gladly accept any suggestions you might have as to where I could locate more information. I have checked the Civil War Soldiers entries on Footnote and the NPS Soldiers and Sailors database.
