The Texas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Chandler, Randall's 28th TX, Walker Division

I found another record that appears to show that he did not die in the war. It reads, "William Chandler, 28th Texas Cavalry, Randal’s 1st Texas Lancers, Company E, Rank: Pvt In, Pvt Out, File M227 Roll 6, From 1862 to 26 May 1865." The information that I had saying he died in the Civil War came from an inventory done on Old Piney Grove Cemetery, Cherokee County, in the late 1960's. The cemetery is on private land and no longer accessible. My father is working on locating the owners for access. Of the 17 tombstones catalogued, 9 of them are Chandlers, but no Asa. William Wiley's wife Lydia Catherine (maiden name Van Zandt) is buried there along with father Abraham Van Zandt whose nephew Isaac VanZandt was a diplomat to the US for the Republic of Texas and instrumental in the annexation of Texas. Now I am extremely curious! He appears to have survived the war, but never made it home. All the census records following the Civil War show Lydia living alone with her children.
