I have Hitchcock's and Armstrong's CMSRs...

Hitchcock's CMSR contains a "Memorandum from Prisoner of War Records" with 4 entries in the section "Information Obtained From" one of which is titled "Escape Book"... I will have to see if I can access those cited/referenced records to try and learn more. His CMSR also contains a letter he wrote Col. Dwight, Commissioner of Exchanges, dated Feb 10, 1865 from "Camp Fedl Prisoners, Tyler Texas" in which he complains that his not being treated as a prisoner of war; "...confeds say no exchanges for officers of Colored Troops. I ask why not. I am not a felon will you please get me out of this." Upon his release/exchange, Hitchock returned to the regiment and per SO #28, HQ 79th USCT, dated June 12, 1865, Hitchock assumed command of Co. G of the regiment. (This order is signed by DM Sutherland, 1st Lt and acting Adjutant of the regiment... as such, I infer that Sutherland's release/exchange preceeded Hitcock's.)

Armstrong's CMSR does not contain a POW Memorandum but does provide information/evidence as to why he may not appear on any rolls/lists. Per letter from JE Hayes to CT Christensen, LtCol, AAG, dated Feb 28, 1865 from New Orleans, Hayes states; "While in the hands of the enemy he [Armstrong]has passed as a private in the 36th Iowa..." Armstrong was from Iowa prior to going to Kansas Territory with Jim Lane.

Might your sources shed any light on a James or Jack Armstrong listed as enlisted member of 36th Iowa?

I am in the process of trying to get Sutherland's CMSR and Pension File.

As far as my other postings regarding the place of confinement of the black enlisted POWs from the 1st KCV, all indications are that the men captured at Flat Rock, C.N., Sept. 16, 1864, were incarcerated at Huntsville. I have spoken with the Texas State Archives and will be going to look at the Huntsville Prison records there for additional information on these men.
