Fannin Co TX Texas State Troops records for this part of the Whatley and Bourland families: Beat 8, Jul 8. Ben Bourland, age 45 mustered as Pvt in Capt. Wm. N. Nail’s Militia Company, Brig-Gen S.A. Roberts, Commanding 14th Texas Militia Brigade. Also in Capt. Nail’s Company was his son- in-law, Jonathan S. Whatley, age 24; Oct 10, 1861. (one Private Ben F. Bourland, Co D, 2nd Regt Cav, Texas State Troops, six (6) months, 1863-64, Remarks: R & F 59; Co Comm.) The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors website states: B. F. Bourland in the Second Regt. Texas Cavalry State Patrol.

"Lucinda Bourland m. Jonathan Whatley, whose gfather, John C Holmes, was the first minister and his father, Hampton Whatley, succeeded him as minister, later, a brother, Jol Whatley, became minister of the church.
