Soldiers names where spelled as they where understood by the person writing the reports. I have no idea about Daniel, but David's card showing where he swore allegance to the USA, shows an X and says his mark, where he signed it. So if he could not read and write it was up to the person filling out the reports to guess as to correct spelling.
