The only personal note in my 1,046-page book is:
.
Editor’s note: When I, your editor Patricia Adkins-Rochette was a child, my parents of Rush Creek bought
groceries at Erin Springs. At that time only two stores were there on a gravel road, OK State Hwy 76,
within sight of the Washita River and the famous Murray mansion: Frank Murray m-1868 at Fort
Arbuckle to Alzira McCaughey (part of the Mayes-Mitchell family) who owned, and could play, the only
piano in Indian Territory. Three miles north of Erin Springs was Lindsay, whose town fathers made sure
that the railroad passed through Lindsay (est. 1902). Lindsay became known as the broomcorn capital
with the promotional slogan: “Lindsay Sweeps the World.” The sandy, rich soil along Rush Creek is ideal
for broomcorn, but broomcorn is too labor intensive for today’s USA economy: harvesting broomcorn
requires human handling at least 10 times, 17 times by the estimates of some. I was raised as a “straw boss
with a johnnie knife, a water jack, and an ant” in my dad’s broomcorn fields and sheds.

You may be interested in my article about Erin Springs in the 1880s (orig. Elm Springs). A direct descendant of James Polk Hazel (1848-1879) said that he had killed 40 men, and compared him with John Wesley Hardin. His grandson Seth Field Hazel (1874-1907) was a successful farmer who lived directly across Rush Creek within sight of where your editior, Patti, was raised.
