Battle of Galveston Anniversary Weekend January 9-10

On January 9 and 10, 2010, Galveston Historical Foundation will mark the 147th anniversary of the most important military event in Galveston’s history: the Civil War Battle of Galveston, which took place in the early morning hours of January 1, 1863.

Scheduled Events

Living History Encampments: Blue & Gray: Camps representing the forces of the North and the South will be established on The Strand (Gray) and on Postoffice Street (Blue) by the 19th-Century Living History Association, Inc. and the First Texas Brigade. Battle of Galveston Walking Tours: Civil War Walking Tours will be led by noted author and Civil War historian Edward T. Cotham. Cotham’s books, including “Battle on the Bay: The Civil War Struggle for Galveston,” will be available for purchase and signing. Civil War Cemetery Tours: Tour the Broadway Cemetery with cemetery historian, Linda McBee. Visit the grave of Confederate General John Bankhead Magruder as well as the monument dedicated to those who perished during the Battle of Galveston. Civil War Galveston Driving Tour: This one-hour driving tour focuses on Galveston’s collection of antebellum architecture as well as locations along the waterfront used as forts during the war. Details to be announced.

Battle of Galveston Harbor Tour: Envision the 1863 Battle of Galveston from the view-point of Galveston’s historic harbor. Boards at the Texas Seaport Museum at Pier 22. For times and advance registration, visit galvestonhistory.org.

Battle of Galveston Costume Ball: Dance the night away as ladies in hoop skirts and gentlemen in top hats and tails celebrate the Battle of Galveston Blue and Gray Ball. Civil War-era costumes are suggested but traditional black tie will suffice. Sponsored by the Historic Tremont Hotel. The event will be held at the Davidson Ballroom of The Tremont House, 24th & Mechanic.
