Third Texas Infantry

With commencement of the Civil War, Charles A. Schreiner of Kerr County enlisted as a Private in Captain S. G. Newton's Company at San Antonio. He served for three and one-half years, achieving the rank of Corporal in Company H of the Third Texas Infantry. This Regiment served along the Texas coast at various points and in October, 1862, totaled 648 effectives. Because the regiment never saw any action, during the latter part of the war morale deteriorated. It disbanded before the Trans-Mississippi Department surrendered in June, 1865. The field officers were Colonel Philip N. Luckett, Lieutenant Colonels Augustus Buchel and Edward F. Gray, and Major John H. Kampman. When disbanded in the spring of 1864, the men of the Third Infantry were assigned to General John G. Walker’s division. For a brief period, during the Jenkins' Ferry phase of the Red River Campaign, the Third Texas Infantry was assigned to the Third Brigade, but this regiment was ordered to return to Texas shortly thereafter.
