Re: CSA Service Roll - Kerr County

Jack Hays (you are correct) surveyed a route to El Paso, resolved some problems with Indians around there and lead a party to California in late 1848/9. He surveyed land around Alameda, CA and at one point owned a lot of the land.(May have sold his Texas land for cash). He was the Sheriff, California's Surveyor General, led a large war party against the the Indians in the late 1850's and sold land. He died there and is buried in Alameda County. I have a lead on Tivy in Tulare County. He may have been the surveyor there in about 1852. Tivy and his sisters went to California in 1849. I suspect they went with Hays. I have not located a place for his hotel, but there was a hotel in French Fort in Tulare County in 1850. I have ask about Tivy and why he may have come back. Hays had several of his ex Rangers with him in California. That in its self could have been interesting. No wonder he became rich. Will answer more when I get word from California, and find my Hays book.

I do not know about Jack Hays land in Kerr. Tivy owned about a hector of land. Col Schriner owned a lot of the rest with a few other ranchers. Will keep looking.
