Re: Martins 5th Partisan Rangers

A history and roster of Martin's regiment may be found here: http://history-sites.com/civilwar/units/5txpart/index.htm

John F. Fairchild, age 33, enlisted as a 4th Corporal in Captain John D. McCamant's Company, Marshall's Squadron, Texas Mounted Cavalry** July 19, 1862 at Greenville, Texas, the regiment was mustered into service August 28, 1862 at Fort Washita, C. N., recorded on the June 30, 1863 muster at Prairie Springs, C. N., as "absent without leave from May 1, 1863," no further records. [Note; there are no later muster rolls available for Company H or any of the other regiment's companies, thus, we do not know if he later returned] Neither he nor a widow are listed as applying for a pension in the Texas index of Confederate pensions.

**This company subsequently became Company H, Martin's Regiment Texas Cavalry. The regiment was first called the 5th Regiment Texas Partisan Rangers but its designation was afterward changed to Martin's Regiment Texas Cavalry and it was dismounted February 17, 1865.
