Found in Albaugh's "Tyler,Texas CSA" pgs 38 & 39, Maj. Gen. Thomas H. Holmes wrote to Confederate Secertary of War Randolph in Hill's behalf, requesting his exchange because. "He is particularly necessary to me now because or his peculiar experince in this particular field (ordnance)." (OR series II, Vol 3 , page 865.)The request was returned to the General with the following endorsement. "Individual exchanges can not be effected." He was soon afterwards exchanged and sent to Holmes' command.

Gabreil Holmes Hill's mother was a Holmes, daughter of Gabriel Holmes.
