Re: 27th Cavalry - Whitfield's Legion

Hi, although we researched the Owen David Griffin you listed in the records several times. This Owen David cannot be our Owen David Griffin as ours was 34 years old by 1862 at enlistment. The Owen David Griffin shown in the records was but 18 years old and is likely a child of one of our Owen's brothers or a related line as the name Owen David is passed down for generations. Considering that, there are no other "Griffin" confederate soldiers in Texas going by either Owen David or David other than the young Owen David 18 and the the David Griffin shown as age 24. Further, the gap in David Griffin's service shown in his record exactly correlates to the birth of one of his son's. I can only think that there was a transcription error when information was copied down and his age was recorded as 24 instead of 34. And clearly he served as he claimed his land and his widow claimed his pension and his obit references his service. Finally, Owen's brother also served in the same unit: Captain Benjamin Griffin (he was captured and held prisoner and wrote in a diary about his service which his line of the family still has. All that in mind, if you can find another David or Owen David Griffin with age recorded as 34 from eastern Texas...I would love to know as this issue has remained puzzling for some time.
