Re: James B. Hannah died; 11th TX Cav, Co A

D. R. Hannah had to have been dropped from the rolls, either through death, discharge, capture, desertion, etc., in-as-much as there is one other muster roll for Company A on file, which is for the period July 1 to December 31, 1863. Missing is the bi-monthly muster roll for the period May/Jun which must have recorded his disposition.

Just yesterday, I discovered there was an Official Document entitled;

"Quarterly Return of Deceased Soldiers of the ____________ Regiment of _____________ For the ________________ Quarter of the year 186_"
I don't find a Form No.

The form requires a listing of those who died in the Quarter, their name, Company, date of death, where, cause, pay & allowances due, indebtedness to the CS, indebtedness "Due the Laundress," to dates of forwarding inventory of effects of deceased and final statement to the Attorney General.

The form closes :

Head Quarters of the ______________ Regiment of ______________
Station: ___________
Date:______________
/s/ _______________ Commanding the Regiment

I found this in a CSR record of a soldier of the 61st Tennessee Infantry for the 1st Quarter of 1863 while stationed at Vicksburg, Miss. His name appears first on this report.

In 13 years of reviewing CSR records, including all of the 43rd Tennessee. I have never seen this form. I would imagine that a treasure trove of these are gathering dust somewhere within the bowels of the National Archives in Washington, D. C.

I will be contacting the NA shortly and hope I will be able to review on my next visit this coming September.
