Company B of Martin's Regiment, 5th Partisan Range

My second gret grandfather Hugh M. Fuller served in the Civil War, as a private in Company B of Martin's Regiment, 5th Partisan Rangers, Texas Cavalry. His service record is shown on the Texas Confederate Records (microfilm) Roll #202. This muster record shows he mustered-in on 5 July 1862 at Sherman, Texas, where he was placed in Captain John Randolph's Company, 1st Battalion, Texas Partisan Rangers, of Martin's Cavalry Regiment. The muster roll also shows he rode 15 miles to rendezvous for this mustering-in, on a horse valued at $100 and with $30 worth of equipment.

The 5th Regiment, Texas Partisan Rangers, was organized in 1863 by combining the remnants of the 10th (Martin's) Texas Cavalry Battalion and the 9th (Randolph's) Texas Cavalry Battalion. Martin's Regiment appears to have been organized on 23 October 1862 with four companies. In 1863, it was increased to a regiment with an additional 2 independent companies and 4 companies of 1st Randolph's Battalion and called the 5th Texas Partisan Rangers.

The 5th Regiment served primarily in Arkansas and in the Indian Territory. This regiment was commanded by Col. Leonidas M. Martin. See, Texas in the War, 1861-1865 by Marcus J. Wright (1965) Hill Jr. College Press. Also in his Company B with Hugh M. Fuller was William M. Savage. J.B. Savage was Captain of in Company D of the 5th. In 1864, they were at Camp Elm Creek in the Chickasaw Nation and in 1865; they were at Camp Sims Bayou.

Hugh Mordicai Fuller returned home soon after the war, ragged, dirty and covered with lice.
