I had a Charlie Smoot as 1st Sargent of the 39th Engineer Group Hq Co in Germany in 1968. Promoted him to Sergeant Major. But that will not help much.

SMOOT, John Henry, Company. "D", 1st Lt., 6th Texas Cavalry Regiment
SMOOT, William H., Company "D”, 6th Texas Cavalry Regiment

John Henry Smoot died of disease in Tupaloo, MS on Sep 28, 1862. He was 25 years old in Sep 1861 and was recruited in the Dallas & Terrant County Area.

William H. Smoot lived through the war and was recruited from the Dallas/Tarrent county area. In 1883 he lived at Roan Oak, Denton County, Texas, Just North of the Dallas/ Ft Worth area. William was 18 years old and was probably related to John Henry.

Do not know if this will help, but it is a start. These are the only two Smoots in the Ross Texas Cavalry Brigade of the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 27th(1st Legion) Texas Cavalry Regiments. Nearly all units were from the North Texas area.
